Cover!!

You know how we talked about the front cover during our novel group meeting and why the author choose to put certain imagery and colours to make a front text for his book. we thought at first that the colours in the windows of the school bus were rainbows but we couldn't figure out what that meant to the book/text. but when we read the first chapter or something of that sort we found out that cap was a hippie and that tye dye was  something that hippies use to represent themselves so that is why tye dye was on the front text. after that we couldn't understand why hippies use tye dye to represent them.

i think that hippies use tye dye because it represents that the colours mix/blend together and that people should mix/blend together to and create peace in the world. that is why there is tye dye and a peace sign on the front cover of the book. i also think that there is a school bus there because it means that maybe a hippie is going to school. (because the windows of the school bus or tye dye) I also think that the author made the cover yellow because that is the cover that most people think of at a school, because the school buses are yellow. i guess the primary school colours that are thought of are yellow and brick.
What do you think?

  1. i also thought that since our book was kind of about hippies and how they use tye dye i decided that maybe my background for my blog should be kind of a form of tye dye to show that!

  2. Hey Sarah,

Great thoughts in your blog post. I think it is amazing that you changed your background to symbolize some of the messages in the text. I like your explanation of the tie dyed colours. I am wondering how do you think the school community, students and teachers are going to respond to a hippie in their community? How would that character react differently than the other characters?

P.S. Think about using a few capitals :)

  6. But to answer your questions Mr. Bowen,
I think the School, Community, Students and teachers are going to act differently to Cap because they might think that he is dumb because he is a hippie and grew up on a farm. But that doesn't mean that he is dumb, he just might be confused about what all the stuff is in the outside world is because he has almost never been there except for shopping. He might be smart in math and stuff he just doesn't know what lockers are or a P.A. system his because he has never used them. Not knowing what these things are might make people think that he is dumb he is not. I also think they might think that he is weird because they might think that "ewww he is a hippie, he is dirty, he wears weird clothes and shoes and he never cuts his hair." that would really rude. I was happy when Hugh decided to hang out with him and be his friend because it said in the book that Cap looked forward to when he could spend time with Hugh at lunch and Hugh could explain everything to him. I think Cap would react differently than the other students because he grew up in a closed enviroment so he would maybe think differently than the other kids and respond differently when something happens. Example near the begining of the book at his first day of school when the 2 kids were fighting he couldn't understand why all the other kids were chanting "fight! fight!" because he grew up thinking that violence was never the answer and he wanted the boys to stop. In that way He might act differently.-Sarah W

  9. I totally agree with you Woody! If I were the author I wouldn't put a summary on the back because the cover indicates the main idea.

  11. I really like the cover as well as it being powerful. I think that you can predict a lot about what happens in the book by it. I think it is good that we did a unit on predicting before doing novel groups because it helps us predict what might happen in the book before we read it. I also totally agree with you Tessi that you don't need a summary on the back of the book because it would give away a lot more than what the cover already said.-Sarah W

  12. You know how I said I don't think there needs to be a summary on the back because the cover indicates the main idea? I think that is why the author chose to do a paragraph of the actual book instead of a summary.

  13. I think that is a good prediction. I think that as well. I think the author choose to put that part in book on the back cover because it is one of the first scenes of him at C Average middle school and it also show him saying one of his quotes that I think have great messages. It also shows Zach when he first meet Cap and how he first thought about Cap.-Sarah W
